Understanding the Field

What Is Transcriptomics & RNA-Seq Data Analysis?

Transcriptomics is the large-scale study of all RNA molecules — the transcriptome — expressed by a cell, tissue, or organism at a given time. While the genome is largely static, the transcriptome is dynamic — changing in response to disease, treatment, environment, and developmental stage. Transcriptomics is therefore the most powerful window into what genes are actually doing in any biological context.

RNA-Seq (RNA Sequencing) is the gold-standard technology for transcriptomics — using Next Generation Sequencing to quantify and characterize every RNA molecule in a sample with unprecedented precision. The ability to analyze RNA-Seq data computationally is now one of the most sought-after skills in biomedical research, clinical genomics, cancer biology, microbiome science, and drug development.

This workshop is the only program globally that delivers all three major branches of transcriptomics analysis — De Novo, Reference-Based, and Meta-Transcriptomics — in a single structured program, with live expert instruction and real biological datasets throughout.

Workshop Dates

20 to 26 April, 2026. Live trainer will take online sessions from 6 PM - 8:30 PM London time on Zoom.

Three Transcriptomics Approaches — One Complete Program

  • De Novo: Build transcriptomes of organisms with no reference genome — discover new genes, novel transcripts, and unknown biology
  • Reference-Based: Align RNA-Seq reads to a known genome — quantify gene expression differences across conditions, tissues, and treatments
  • Meta-Transcriptomics: Analyze the active transcriptome of entire microbial communities — gut microbiome, environmental samples, clinical specimens
  • All three use real biological datasets — not synthetic toy data
  • Galaxy Server pipeline throughout — no command-line required
  • Pathway analysis, network analysis & biological interpretation in every module

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this new comprehensive Transcriptomics & RNA-Seq Data Analysis workshop.

What makes this transcriptomics workshop different from other RNA-Seq courses?

This is the only workshop globally that combines all three major transcriptomics approaches — De Novo Transcriptome Assembly, Reference-Based Gene Expression Analysis, and Meta-Transcriptomics Microbiome Analysis — in one structured 7-day program. Previously offered as three separate workshops, this combined program delivers more comprehensive skills, better cross-module understanding, and exceptional value in a single enrollment.

Do I need prior bioinformatics or RNA-Seq experience?

No prior bioinformatics, RNA-Seq, or command-line experience is required. All three modules use the Galaxy bioinformatics server — a browser-based, GUI-driven platform accessible to complete beginners. The expert team builds your skills progressively from RNA-Seq fundamentals on Day 1 through to advanced metatranscriptomics by Day 7.

What is the difference between De Novo and Reference-Based transcriptomics?

Reference-Based transcriptomics aligns RNA-Seq reads to an existing, known reference genome — used for well-studied organisms like humans, mice, and model plants. De Novo transcriptomics assembles the transcriptome from scratch without any reference genome — essential for studying non-model organisms, novel species, or organisms where a reference genome is incomplete or unavailable. This workshop teaches both approaches, so you can analyze any organism's transcriptome regardless of whether a reference genome exists.

What is meta-transcriptomics and how is it different from metagenomics?

Metagenomics sequences all DNA in a microbial community — telling you which organisms are present. Meta-transcriptomics sequences all RNA — telling you which genes those microbes are actively expressing at a given moment. Meta-transcriptomics is therefore a functional readout of the microbiome, not just a census. It's more clinically informative, more complex, and rarer in training programs — making this module particularly valuable for participants interested in gut health, infectious disease, and environmental genomics.

What tools and software will I use throughout this workshop?

The Galaxy bioinformatics server is the primary platform throughout all three modules — no command-line required. Additionally you will work with RNA-Seq QC tools, de novo assemblers, alignment tools, DGE analysis packages, pathway analysis platforms (KEGG, GO enrichment), network analysis tools, taxonomic classification databases (110,000+ microbial genomes), and microbial gene expression databases (~100 million genes).

Are sessions recorded? What if I miss a day?

Yes, all 7 sessions are recorded and shared after class via YouTube using the Gmail ID you register with. If you miss a session, you can complete all corresponding tasks by watching the recording at your own pace. The program is fully self-paced for revision — every recording is available.

Will I receive a certificate after this transcriptomics workshop?

Yes. Upon successfully completing all practical tasks across all three modules, you will receive a BDG Lifesciences certificate of completion via email. The certificate carries a unique barcode for independent verification and covers all three transcriptomics approaches — De Novo, Reference-Based, and Meta-Transcriptomics — making it a uniquely comprehensive credential for your academic and professional portfolio.
